Papervision 2.0: Cube Tutorial

with 3 comments

Lee Brimelow has uploaded a new tutorial to gotoAndLearn() that shows you how to use Papervision3D 2.0 to create an interactive cube with different textures on each part of the cube. This example is using the GreatWhite branch of Papervision3D. We all know pv3d has changed the way people and developers experience the interactive web! Take a quick look if you are interested because it really kicks some serious ass.

And if you want to take ik to the next level… the guys from Boulevart also released a cool pv3d cube tutorial. It explains how you can rotate a cube using a registration or pivot point. Definately worth checking I guess!

Iphone hates the Flash player ( a series of complex iphone issues )

with 6 comments

Yesterday I was proud to announce that the iphone would finally support the flash player. This seemed like some good news but after only 1 day it has turned into the same old frustrating illusion that it was before. Iphone and the flash player are a no go apparently. First Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen announced that they were working on Flash for the iPhone, now Adobe clarifies that no, they’re actually not. Personally I think they are messing with all the people who want a decent internet experience on their iphone. And for developers like me it is also a pain in the ass that we can’t reach the large number of iphone users. If apple would like to present the iphone as ”the smartphone” then my guess is that not implementing the flash player is not that smart.
Iphone

Even though Steve Jobs explained his reasons why Flash is not available for the iPhone (Jobs claimed that Flash Lite for mobile was not full featured enough, while the full version of Flash would not run well on the iPhone ) I think not providing a flash player is even less featured!

Just like aral I’m shutting my ears now!

Iphone loves the flash player!

with 2 comments

Adobe made comments today that they will be delivering a Flash client for the iPhone. According to Adobe’s Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen, Adobe has downloaded the iPhone SDK and is planning on building a Flash Player for the iPhone and distributing it via Apple’s iTunes App store.

Iphone

We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone,” Narayen said. “We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves.”

The news comes a few weeks after Apple’s Steve Jobs explained his reasons why Flash is not available for the iPhone. Jobs claimed that Flash Lite for mobile was not full featured enough, while the full version of Flash would not run well on the iPhone.

I personally believe this is (finally) a good thing. When I was in Amsterdam I noticed lot’s of iphone users who were dissapointed they could not run the mobile guide. Let’s hope they fix it soon!

Playr: An AS3 music player engine

with 2 comments

Today Ronny Welter released his Playr Class.
Playr is a Flash Actionscript 3 class which makes it very easy to create a music player in flex/flash or AIR in about 10lines of code. You can use this engine for a loop, a single song or an entire playlist. I’ve already been using a beta version of his class in my FLEX/AIR project ”Interlude” and the new additions really come in handy. Ronny has implementend a “shuffle mode” and a “Track Progress”. I have wrote some extensions on this cool engine as well and I will release them soon.. If Ronny let’s me :)

FEIERN: 25/04/08: Let’s get minimal

with one comment

Love Minimal/Techno but hate all the commercial crap (like I do) ? It does not always has to be 10daysoff, I love Techno, Dour or other festivals. FEIERN is an alternative minimal/techno event, hosted at the Ramada Plaza, Antwerp, the 25th of April.

You can expect some stunning live performances from Ahmet Sisman vs. Tim Querengaesser (lessizmore vs. toys for boys, DE), Danny Lilwall (musictracx, 76 recordings, UK) and Eklektiker vs. Khuram (feiern, Be).Entrance will only cost you 7€ and it kicks off at 23.00 hrs. You can already get yourself warmed up. Go to the feiern site and already explore some live sets mixed by the DJ’s who will also perform the 25th. If this doesn’t do the trick… well let’s say you are more into Rihanna stuff then and you should better stay home anyway!

Find out some more info (road description and so on) here

AS3 Secure zip extension

without comments

Today andy jacobs released the AS3 Secure zip extension he wrote a while ago. It is an extension on David Chang’s Zip API with the RC4 encryption method made by Metal Hurlant. Andy made a nice extension which also supports encryption. In a nutshell: This api makes it possible to encrypt any external data (in as3) and encrypts it so you can not open it on a local computer or mac or… You can only load it in flash and in that way (re)use your assets, compressed into one file.

Internship @ BoulevArt

with 4 comments

This week I started my internship at BoulevArt. It will last for 3 months and I will be working with Wim Vanhenden and his Flash Team. Interesting people, interesting projects, interesting 3 months if you ask me! :) I am also getting some time to work out some personal interests/projects. As you maybe have heard or read a while ago, I’ve developed the official FITC Mobile Guide and I think I might say it was a succes. Everybody was really positive and excited about the application. I even got a thankyou-present from the adobe mobile team. They have send me a nokia n95! Thank you guys that was really a cool surprise! :)
The people at FITC also were happy with the application and the feedback so they asked me to develop one for the upcoming Toronto Edition as well. That’s the first mobile project I’m working on. I’m planning on working out more mobile projects here but the FITC Toronto application is the first (and most concrete) project on my list. I’m also attending this conference together with Nicolas Lierman (from Boulevart-Google Analytics) and I’m absolutely looking forward to this!

See you in Toronto for a hell of a conference and if you are coming.. let me know by leaving a comment!

AS3 ComputeSpectrum: let’s visualise some particles!

with 8 comments

A while ago I studied Seb Lee-Delisle’s particle engine and started playing with it. Particles in as3 are really cool and if you try to be creative you can create nice visual output. It didn’t take me long to start combining my own engine (based on the one of Seb of course ) with the computespectrum in AS3. I’m working on a AIR MP3 Desktop player called ”interlude” and I thought it would be cool to have some visuals that react to the music being played. A beta version of interlude will be released soon!

Particel engine

Anyway, HERE you can check out my visual particle effect (or you can just click the image :) ) and please let me know what you think!

Devine

The Technical University of West-Flanders, PIH department is adding a new track to their Multimedia and Communication Technology (MCT) offering starting in September, namely Digital Media and Design. The focus for “Devine” as its affectionately called includes storyboarding, motion graphics, web design, video editing using industry standard tools like Flash, Flex, AIR, Photoshop, After Effects, 3D Studio MAX etc. The scripting languages covered include PHP, ActionScript, XML, HTML, CSS, Javascript.

I am studying MCT, in my last year I specialized in Multimedia and I think it is too bad Devine wasn’t available at the time I started my studies. I would definately have gone for this course then! :) Let’s hope it is as good as they say it’s gonna be.

visit their site here or check Ronny Welter’s blog for a summary of the first information session they held: http://nocreativity.com/blog/devine-digital-media-and-design (in Dutch)
