The FITC event in Amsterdam last weekend really was amazing. I met lots of interesting people, saw some wicked sessions and had a great time at the parties afterwards. I also got very positive feedback on the mobile application. Mark Doherty ( a member of the adobe Mobile Team ) told me he was very excited about it and that everybody from the mobile team got an email with the application included. Definately cool shit. I also had the chance to meet with Shawn Pucknell, the founder of FITC, in real life in stead of sending mails like we did before the event. He said he noticed that the application was cool and handy and that we could conclude it was a succes. That’s why he asked me to make one for FITC Toronto as well ! I’m really looking forward making this application and I hope it will be as good (or even better) as the Amsterdam edition :)
I also met the guys from Boulevart, where I’m going to do my internship and it was a blast. They were very excited about the mobile schedule and they are really looking forward to start the internship. I’m going to join Wim in the Flash Team and I get some time to work out the Toronto application!
But for now, let’s focus on my last school project I have to finish before the internship begins. We got four weeks to study some things we did not handled in the courses and next week we need to present what we have created and learned.
I started an mp3 desktop player called ‘Interlude’ made in FLEX 3 and AIR. Soon I’ll Release a Beta version so you guys can check it out. You can manage your library and the application has some smart playlist generation. Via Last fm the player checks out which of the similar artists you have in your library and you can mix your playlist up. You can also attach a personal mood to every mp3 you import. So let’s say you like to listen to Radiohead when you are coding, you can just attach a mood called ”coding” or something. So when you are in the mood for some coding music you can let the player make a playlist with all of your personal coding music! More info following later.
I’d like to thank the guys from boulevart for the feedback and support, The people of FITC ( especially shawn pucknell ) for giving me this great oppurtunity. I’d also like to thank Aral Balkan for his blogpost so the application got a bit more in the spotlight and my student collegues (andy, dimi, dietlev, freek, joren and pieter) for the lovely time we had!
Finally I’ve finished the FITC Mobile Beta Version! For those who are new to this blog, I’m a student multimedia in Belgium (@hogeschool west-vlaanderen departement PIH. ) I thought it would be cool to take a closer look at flash lite and here we are. I’ve developed an official FITC Mobile Schedule and here is the beta version.
—– UPDATE —-
Windows Mobile User? HERE you can download a rar file containing the swf and the images. Symbian OS user? HERE you can download a sis file so you can install the app onto your device. (powered by SWF2GO)
Feel free to give it a try and please let me know what you think!
To test this application you’ll need a flash lite 2.0 enabled mobile device. I’ve tested it on a nokia n81 and n95 and it works great. I also tested on a nokia 5700 (less powerful device than N81 or N95) and on this device the application also performed very well. if you don’t have the flash lite player 2 installed you can download it at adobe labs ( flash lite 2 for windows mobile 5.0 is also compatible with windows mobile 6 )
HERE you can download a rar file containing the swf and the images. Transfer them to your device and make sure they are located in the same directory. Now you just need to open the swf with the flash lite player and you should see the app running on your device!
Feel free to let me know what you think and if you find a bug please tell me so I can update the application :) FITC is kicking off on 24/02 so I still have time. I’d definately appreciate any kind of feedback or reaction.
Today I’ve received a press release e-mail from FITC telling that this stunning event is already completely sold out. Too bad for those who are not attending if you ask me. (and if you don’t ask me I’m still saying it is too bad)
Toronto, Canada [February 11, 2008] — Two weeks in advance of its European debut, FITC has sold out its event in Amsterdam. FITC Amsterdam is scheduled for February 25 + February 26, 2008 at the Felix Meritis European Centre for Arts and Sciences. This is the first time that FITC, now in its seventh year, has ventured outside North America.
“Amsterdam has a reputation as a place for cool technology and hot design, which is one of the reasons why we chose it for our European debut,” says Shawn Pucknell, Founder of FITC and Executive Producer of FITC Amsterdam. “Now that the event has sold out well in advance, we’re confident in the choice we made.”
There was also a first official FITC Mobile Release. Very cool and I’m extremely excited about this. I’m working on it as we speak but it takes a while to get a decent performance and for those who are familiar with Flash Lite.. Yeah it is quite a struggle to get things running on a small device :) I’m testing the application on my Nokia n81 and just finished the navigation part. It should run more smoothly and I’m working on that now. In the device central I’m testing on the nokia n95 but I’ve noticed that this is not always the same as on an actual device.. Can be frustrating! :) I’m releasing a beta version soon so the application could be tested. Please notice that it is designed for ”smartphones” so your device should have a bit of soul and power to run the application smoothly! :)
As a bonus, attendees will be able to access the full FITC Amsterdam event schedule on mobile thanks to developer Thomas Joos (Belgium). The mobile application is being written with Adobe® Flash® Lite™ software, a powerful runtime engine for mobile and consumer electronics devices. You can follow Thomas’ work on the application at https://vilebody.wordpress.com.

For now that’s my rough schedule but it can change at runtime ;) As you might notice I’m going to see Nicolas Lierman;. Really excited bout it not just because of the session but also because he might become my tutor for my internship. Within a few weeks I’m starting it @Boulevart. I’m not sure either I’m going for flex or flash ( or both maybe ) but I’m sure it is going to be a blast!
I’m also going to see Koen De Weggheleire. He has succesfully teached me Object Oriented Programming with AS3 and the photoshop basics in the past ( Yeah indeed!! Koen gave Photoshop sessions ^^ ) . Funny actually that I’m paying now to see hem when I’ve already had 12 sessions for free this year. I’m really hoping he saves the best for last.
Hope to see you guys there! Using the FITC Mobile Application of course! I’m working on it as we speak. Just finished the navigation of the app (along with the design and branding etc.. ) And now I’m starting to implement the content! Flash Lite though is quite stressfull. No errors on the device central but when I run it on my mobile I get strange errors: ”problem with flash content: 9″ => When i look up this error I get the following: ”no error code available”. Let’s hope I can finish it without any bugs !
